Bo Kata

  1. Begin in a Closed Parallel Stance with the Bo held vertically at your right side. Your left hand is across your chest with the palm facing away from you and your right hand is down near your hip with the palm facing your hip. This is the Bo Kata Formal Attention Stance.
  2. Rotate the Bo top forward and down to perform a clockwise sweep with the left end of the Bo.
  3. Move left foot to left (west) into a Shiko Tachi while executing a low block and high block with the Bo.

  4. Step right foot forward (north) into a Right Front Stance while striking down with the right side of the Bo.
  5. Step left foot forward into a Left Front Stance while striking down with the left side of the Bo.
  6. Step right foot forward into a Right Front Stance while striking down with the right side of the Bo.
  7. Perform a low block + high block. Release your left hand grip on the Bo and rotate the Bo 1/2 turn clockwise. Reaching your left arm across your right arm, grip the Bo with your right hand with your right palm facing north (your left palm is now facing south, and your arms are crossed with right arm to the north and left arm to the south). Release your right hand grip, move your right hand to the east and grip the Bo with your right hand palm facing north. Your left hand is now to the west and your right hand to the east. Move your back foot to the east and rotate into a south-facing Left Front Stance while bringing the Bo to a vertical position with the left side high. Then strike down with the left side of the Bo.

  8. Step forward (south) into a Right Front Stance while striking down with the right side of the Bo.
  9. Step forward into a Left Front Stance while striking down with the left side of the Bo.

  10. Bring the left foot back and then to your left into an east-facing Left Front Stance with a High Block.
  11. Execute a Right Front Kick and step forward into a Right Front Stance with a High Block.
  12. Move the back foot to your right and pivot into a west-facing Left Front Stance with a High Block.
  13. Execute a Right Front Kick and step forward into a Right Front Stance with a High Block.

  14. Pivot to your left into a south-facing Left Front Stance. Execute a Low Block and a High Block.
  15. Step forward (south) into a Right Front Stance while striking down with the right side of the Bo.

  16. Pivot 3/4 turn to your left into a west-facing Left Front Stance and execute a High Block.
  17. Step forward (west) into a Right Front Stance and while striking down with the right side of the Bo.
  18. Pivot 1/2 turn to your left into an east-facing Left Front Stance and execute a High Block.
  19. Step forward (east) into a Right Front Stance while striking down with the right side of the Bo.
  20. Move your left foot slightly to your right and pivot into a north-facing Shiko Tachi. Your feet should be on an east-west line and your right foot should be where it was when you began the form. Execute a Low Block.
  21. Move left foot to right into a Closed Stance. Perform a clockwise sweep with the left side of the Bo and then rotate Bo to vertical position and assume Formal Attention Stance.
