Sai Kata Nidan
(Sai Kata #2

Sai Kata Nidan is the second of two traditional Kamishin Ryu Sai kata that were taught to Sensei Rockenbach by Master Keyser. Sai Kata Nidan uses a number of basic but practical Sai movements. The lower and upper X-Blocks down the center of the form are kind of classy.

Sai Kata Nidan

  1. Begin from a Closed Parallel Stance with the Sais held tightly to your hips pointed down. Bow. Slowly raise each Sai outward through a wide arc and bring the hilts together overhead. Then lower them through the same arc and bring the hilts together at the bottom of the arc directly in front of your groin. As the Sais meet at the top or bottom, the foils are on the east and west side of each Sai. Next, cross your arms with the left on the bottom, draw them back like a pull back hand with the foils vertical, then thrust them downward in front of you with the foils east-west.
  2. Pivot left into a Right Cat Stance and perform a Left Collarbone Strike and Left Outer Block.
  3. Step forward (west) into a 3rd Fighting Stance and perform a Right Middle Strike with the butt of the Sai.
  4. Pivot 1/2 turn right into a Cat Stance (facing east) and perform a Right Collarbone Strike and Right Outer Block.
  5. Step forward (east) into a 3rd Fighting Stance and perform a Left Middle Strike with the butt of the Sai.
  6. Pivot left 1/2 turn (facing north) into a Right Cat Stance and perform an Upper X-Block (left Sai on bottom), followed by a Lower X-Block. Shuffle both feet forward (remain in a Right Cat Stance) and perform a Double Lower Strike with the butts of both Sais. This is a block against a groin or front kick.
  7. Step forward into a Left Cat Stance and repeat the X-Blocks and Strike of (6) above.
  8. Step forward into a Right Cat Stance and repeat the X-Blocks and Strike of (6) above.
  9. Pivot left 3/8 turn into a Right Back Stance facing southeast. Execute a Left Down Block and bring the right hand across the abdomen in a guarding position.
  10. Extend forward (southeast) into a Left Front Stance with a Double Collarbone Strike.
  11. Retract back into a Right Back Stance with a Left Down Block with the right hand across the abdomen in a guarding position.
  12. Moving the left foot, pivot 1/4 turn to the right into a Right Back Stance (southwest) with a Left Down Block with the right hand across the abdomen in a guarding position.
  13. Extend forward (southwest) into a Left Front Stance with a Double Collarbone Strike.
  14. Retract back into a Right Back Stance with a Left Down Block with the right hand across the abdomen in a guarding position.
  15. Moving the left foot, pivot left 1/8 turn into a Right Cat Stance facing south and perform an Upper X-Block (left Sai on bottom), followed by a Lower X-Block. Shuffle both feet forward (remain in a Right Cat Stance) and perform a Double Lower Strike with the butts of both Sais. This is a block against a groin or front kick.
  16. Step forward into a Left Cat Stance and repeat the X-Blocks and Strike of (15) above.
  17. Step forward into a Right Cat Stance and repeat the X-Blocks and Strike of (15) above.
  18. Moving the left foot, pivot 3/8 turn to the left into a Shiko Tachi with the left foot northwest of the right foot. As the turn is executed, perform a Left Elbow Strike with the point of the Sai to the northwest.
  19. Moving the right foot, step northwest into a Shiko Tachi with the right foot northwest of the left foot. Perform a Right Elbow Strike to the northwest.
  20. Moving the right foot, pivot clockwise 1/2 turn into a Shiko Tachi with the right foot northeast of the left foot. Perform a Right Elbow Strike to the northeast.
  21. Moving the left foot, step northeast into a Shiko Tachi with the left foot northeast of the right foot. Perform a Left Elbow Strike to the northeast.
  22. Step long to the southwest first with the left foot and then bring the right foot back into a normal ready stance. You should be back at your starting position.
  23. Move the left foot to the right foot into a Closed Stance. Then repeat the formal bowing process of (1) to finish the form.
