Kamishin Shuurai is a beginner level kata. Its primary purpose is to present some block-and-counter combinations for side kicks, as well as some side kick attacks. As a kata, Kamishin Shuurai serves as a mnemonic device for remembering these combinations. It is a very fast kata with swiftly flowing attacks that help a student to build speed and flow.

Shuurai

  1. Right Fist-to-Left Knifehand Bow from Musubi Tachi. Move left foot to Yoi Tachi.
  2. Drop to Shiko Tachi with Left Knife Hand Inner Block to west, with Keyii. This is a guarding position against an attack from the west.
  3. Perform a Left Outer Parry while pivoting clockwise by moving the left foot to the east. As you put your left foot down, execute a Right Heel Hook Kick to the west. End in a Shiko Tachi (right foot west, left foot east) with a Right Knifehand Inner Block to the west. This is a defense against a Step Behind Side Kick from the west with the attacker and defender in the Open Stance starting positions. The final Shiko Tachi and Knifehand Inner Block is a guard.
  4. Jump vertically slightly while pivoting clockwise to execute a foot change and execute a Right Knifehand Inner Block to the east, with Keyii. This is a guarding position against an attack from the east.
  5. Perform a Right Outer Parry while pivoting counterclockwise by moving the right foot west. As you put your right foot down, execute a Left Heel Hook Kick to the east. End in a Shiko Tachi (left foot east, right foot west) with a Left Knifehand Inner Block to the east. This is a defense against a Step Behind Side Kick from the east with the attacker and defender in the Open Stance starting positions. The final Shiko Tachi and Knifehand Inner Block is a guard.
  6. Look to your right and then lean to the left into a very deep Left Front Stance while executing a shield block with your right side against an incoming Rolling Back Knuckle + Step Behind Side Kick.
  7. Execute a Step Behind Side Right Side Kick + Rolling Back Knuckle attack to the west (your right).
  8. Put your right foot down after the Right Step Behind Side Kick in the previous step and immediately execute a Left Spinning Back Kick to the north. As you put your kicking foot down into a left-foot-north Shiko Tachi, execute a Left Spinning Knifehand Strike. Shifting into a narrow Left Front Stance, execute a Right Reverse Side Middle Thrust to the north. This is a defensive counterattack towards the north.
  9. Execute a Face Level Right Side Kick to north. This is a continuation of the counterattack.
  10. As you step down from your side kick, execute a Right Hopping Side Kick + Right Horizontal Raking Back Knuckle Strike + Keyii to the north. This combination is a very effective attack, as it is quite difficult to defend against two strikes simultaneously.
  11. As you land from the previous Hopping Side Kick, pivot counterclockwise and execute a Left Spinning Back Kick to the east, landing in a left-foot-east, right-foot-west Shiko Tachi and Left Knifehand Inner Block to the east. This is a natural continuation of your body momentum and will give any attacker from the east something to think about. Even if the attack misses, it may break up an impending attack.
  12. Execute a Left Open Hand Inner Parry to the east while drawing your left foot back slightly, then execute a Hammer and Sickle technique to the east. You should end up in a Right Front Stance to the south. This is a defense against an attack from the east with a step-behind type side kick where the attacker and defender begin from Closed Stance starting positions.
  13. Move your left foot forward into a Shiko Tachi (left foot east, right foot west) and execute a Right Knifehand Inner Block to the west. This is a guarding position against an attack from the west.
  14. Execute a Right Open Hand Inner Parry to the west while drawing your right foot back slightly, then execute a Hammer and Sickle technique to the west. You should end up in a Left Front Stance to the south. This is a defense against an attack from the west with a step-behind type side kick where the attacker and defender begin from Closed Stance starting positions.
  15. Move your right foot forward into a Shiko Tachi (left foot east, right foot west) and execute a Left Knifehand Inner Block to the east. This is a guarding position.
  16. Execute a Right Side Kick to the east and put your foot down into a right-foot-east, left-foot-west Shiko Tachi. This is just back leg side kick practice.
  17. Look to your left and then lean to the right into a very deep Right Front Stance while executing a shield block with your left side against an incoming Rolling Back Knuckle + Step Behind Side Kick.
  18. Execute a Step Behind Side Left Side Kick + Rolling Back Knuckle attack to the west (your left).
  19. As you put your left foot down from the previous kicks, immediately execute a Right Spinning Back Kick to the south. As you put your kicking foot down into a right-foot-south Shiko Tachi, execute a Right Spinning Knifehand Strike. Shifting into a narrow Right Front Stance, execute a Left Reverse Side Middle Thrust to the south. This is a defensive counterattack towards the south.
  20. Execute a Face Level Left Side Kick to south. This is a continuation of the counterattack.
  21. As you step down from your side kick, execute a Left Hopping Side Kick and Left Horizontal Raking Back Knuckle Strike + Keyii to the south. This combination is a very effective attack, as it is quite difficult to defend against two strikes simultaneously.
  22. As you land from the previous Hopping Side Kick, pivot clockwise and execute a Right Spinning Back Kick to the east, landing in a right-foot-east, left-foot-west Shiko Tachi and Right Knifehand Inner Block to the east. This is a natural continuation of your body momentum and will give any attacker from the east something to think about. Even if the attack misses, it may break up an impending attack.
  23. Execute a Right Foot Dropping Side Kick to Groin to the east. This is a defensive counterattack against a step-behind side kick attack from the east.
  24. Recover to a Shiko Tachi (right foot east, left foot west) with Right Knifehand Inner Block to east. This is a guarding position.
  25. Execute a Left Knifehand Inner Block to west. This is a guarding position.

  27. Recover to a Shiko Tachi (right foot east, left foot west) with Left Knifehand Inner Block to west. This is a guarding position.
  28. Move Left Foot to Yoi Tachi.
  29. Move left foot to Musubi Tachi with a Right Fist to Left Knifehand bow.
