Pinan Godan
(Peaceful Mind #5)

Pinan Godan is the fifth of the five Okinawan Pinan kata. The Pinan kata are beginner level forms. Most Karate styles will perform the Pinans (called Heians in some schools), although there will be differences in the kata.



Pinan Godan

  1. Begin in Yoi Tachi.
  2. Pivoting 90 degrees left to face west, move left foot into a Left Foot Forward Cat Leg Stance and execute a Left Inner Forearm Block followed immediately with a Right Hand Middle Punch.
  3. Pivoting 90 degrees to right to face north again while moving right foot west into a Closed Parallel Stance facing north, move right fist to palm up pull-back position with left forearm horizontal across your chest with the fist palm down.
  4. Pivoting 90 degrees to right to face east, move the right foot into a Right Foot Forward Cat Leg Stance and execute a Right Inner Forearm Block followed immediately with a Left Hand Middle punch.
  5. Pivoting 90 degrees to left to face north again while moving left foot east into a Closed Parallel Stance facing north, move left fist to pull-back position with right forearm horizontal across your chest with the fist palm down.
  6. Step forward with your right foot into a Right Front Stance facing north and execute a Reinforced Right Inner Block (left hand is open with the palm against the right inner forearm) to the north.
  7. Stepping forward (north) with left foot into Left Front Stance with Fist Lower X-Block.
  8. Without stepping, immediately execute a Knifehand Upper X-Block (left hand on bottom).
  9. Pivoting on your left foot, move your right foot into a parallel facing east and execute a Left Bottom Fist Strike to the north.
  10. Step north with your right foot into a north-facing Right Front Stance and execute a Fist Same Side Middle Thrust and Keyii.
  11. Pivot 180 degrees counter-clockwise (left) into an east-facing Shiko Tachi with Right Fist Lower Block to south.
  12. Move right foot slightly north into an east-facing Parallel Stance and execute a Left Bottom Fist Strike to north.
  13. Open your left fist into a vertical palm and execute a Right Outer Crescent Kick into the palm, ending in a Right Front Stance facing north. After the kick and as you move into the Right Front Stance, execute a Right Outer Elbow Strike into your Left Palm.
  14. Move your left foot forward into a Right Foot Forward, Left Foot Back Cross-Legged Stance facing north as you execute a Right Rolling Back Knuckle Strike to north, ending with your left hand palm down under your right elbow.
  15. Move your left foot slightly south into a west-facing Parallel Stance while keeping your hands in the same position as before, but raised slightly higher. Turn your head to the south.
  16. Pull back both fists into a pull-back position while turning counter-clockwise (left) and jumping while performing a Fist Lower X-Block to the east and landing in a Right Foot Forward Cross-Legged Stance facing east, with Keyii.
  17. Step forward with the right foot into a Right Front Stance facing East and execute a Right Reinforced Middle Inner Block with both hands as fists.
  18. Without moving your feet, turn your head towards your left foot and execute a Right Upper Inner Forearm Block and a Left Fist Down Block simultaneously.
  19. Move your left foot to your right foot into a north facing Closed Parallel Stance without moving your hand positions.
  20. Move your right foot to the North-East into a Back Body Leaning Stance (Kokutsu Tachi) facing North-East. At the same time, execute a Left Upper Inner Forearm Block and Right Fist Lower Block.
  21. Move the Right foot back to a north-facing Yoi Tachi.
