Pinan Nidan
(Peaceful Mind #2)

Pinan Nidan is the second of the five Okinawan Pinan kata. The Pinan kata are beginner level forms. Most Karate styles will perform the Pinans (called Heians in some schools), although there will be differences in the kata.



Pinan Nidan

  1. Begin in Yoi Tachi. Turn left into a west facing Left Cat Leg Stance while executing a Left Downward Hammerfist Block.
  2. Step forward (west) into a Right Front Stance and execute a Right Middle Thrust.
  3. Turn right into an east facing Right Front Stance and execute a Right Down Block.
  4. Execute a “tear-away“ with the right hand followed by a circular over-the-top Right Hammerfist Strike Descending Strike to opponent‘s face while retracting the right foot into a right foot forward 3rd Fighting Stance.
  5. Step forward into a Left Front Stance with Left Fist Same Side Middle Thrust.
  6. Step north with the left foot into a Left Front Stance with Left Down Block.
  7. Step forward (north) into a Right Front Stance with Right Upper Block.
  8. Step forward into a Left Front Stance with Left Upper Block.
  9. Step forward into a Right Front Stance with Right Upper Block and Keyii.
  10. Turn counterclockwise into a southeast facing Left Front Stance with Left Down Block.
  11. Step forward (southeast) into a Right Front Stance and Right Fist Middle Thrust.
  12. Turn clockwise into a southwest facing Right Front Stance with Right Down Block.
  13. Step forward (southwest) into a Left Front Stance with Left Fist Middle Thrust.
  14. Turn counterclockwise into a south facing Left Front Stance with Left Down block.
  15. Step forward (south) into a Right Front Stance with Right Fist Middle Thrust.
  16. Step forward into a Left Front Stance with Left Middle Thrust.
  17. Step forward (south) into a Right Front Stance with Right Fist Middle Thrust and Keyii.
  18. Turn counterclockwise into a Shiko Tachi with your left foot northwest (chest facing northeast) from your right foot and execute a Left Knifehand Down Pressing Block with the right knifehand palm up across your solar plexus.
  19. Step to the northwest with your right foot into a Shiko Tachi and execute a Right Knifehand Down Pressing Block with the left knifehand palm up across your solar plexus.
  20. Turning clockwise, move your right foot to the north east into a Shiko Tachi (chest facing northwest) and execute a Right Knifehand Down Pressing Block with the left knifehand palm up across your solar plexus.
  21. Step to the northeast with your left foot into a Shiko Tachi and execute a Left Knifehand Down Pressing Block with the right knifehand palm up across your solar plexus.
  22. Move the left foot back to Yoi Tachi.
