Pinan Shodan

Pinan Shodan is the first of the five Okinawan Pinan kata. The Pinan kata are beginner level forms. Most Karate styles will perform the Pinans (called Heians in some schools), although there will be differences in the kata.



Pinan Shodan

  1. Begin in Yoi Tachi. Turn left into a west facing Left-Foot-Forward Cat Leg Stance while executing a Square Block to the west. Follow with a Right Bottom Fist Outer Block.
  2. Pivot clockwise into a north facing Parallel Stance and execute a Left Bottom Fist strike to west.
  3. Turn right into an east facing Right-Foot-Forward Cat Leg Stance while executing a square block. Follow with a Left Bottom Fist Outer Block.
  4. Turn into a north facing Parallel Stance and execute a Right Bottom Fist Strike to east.
  5. Turn clockwise rearward (south) into a Right-Foot-Forward Cat Stance and execute a Right Inner Forearm Inner Block followed by a Right Front Kick.
  6. Turn counterclockwise into a north facing Left-Foot-Forward Cat Stance with Left Knife Hand Inner Block.
  7. Step forward (north) into a Right-Foot-Forward Cat Stance and Right Knife Hand Inner Block.
  8. Step forward (north) into a Left-Foot-Forward Cat Stance and Left Knife Hand Inner Block.
  9. Step forward into a Right Front Stance and execute a Right Spear Hand Middle Strike with Keyii. The left hand is pulled back as a fist.
  10. Turn counter clockwise to face south east in a Left-Foot-Forward Cat Stance and execute a Left Knife Hand Inner Block.
  11. Step forward (south east) into a Right-Foot-Forward Cat Stance and execute a Right Knife Hand Inner Block.
  12. Turn clockwise to face south west in a Right-Foot-Forward Cat Stance and execute a Right Knife Hand Inner Block.
  13. Step forward (south west) into a Left-Foot-Forward Cat Stance and execute a Left Knife Hand Inner Block.
  14. Turn counterclockwise to face south into a Left Front Stance and execute a Right Inner Forearm Circular Inner Block.
  15. Execute a Right Front Kick while stepping forward (south) into a Right Front Stance and execute a Left Fist Middle Thrust. Then execute a Left Inner Forearm Circular Inner Block.
  16. Execute a Left Front Kick while stepping forward (south) into a Left Front Stance and execute a Right Fist Middle Thrust.
  17. Step forward (south) into a 3rd Fighting Stance (Sanchin Tachi) and execute a Closed Fist Right Reinforced Inner Forearm Inner Block. The left supporting hand is closed.
  18. Turn counterclockwise to face north west into a Left Front Stance while executing a Left Down Block.
  19. Step forward (north west) into a Right Forward Leaning Stance and execute a Right Fist Upper Thrust.
  20. Turn clockwise to face north east into a Right Front Stance while executing a Right Down Block.
  21. Step forward (north east) into a Left Forward Leaning Stance and execute a Left Fist Upper Thrust.
  22. Move the left foot back to Yoi Tachi.
