Pinan Yondan
(Peaceful Mind #4)

Pinan Yondan is the fourth of the five Okinawan Pinan kata. The Pinan kata are beginner level forms. Most Karate styles will perform the Pinans (called Heians in some schools), although there will be differences in the kata.

Pinan Yondan

  1. Begin in Yoi Tachi.
  2. Turn left into a Left Foot Forward Cat Leg Stance and execute a Knife Hand Square Block.
  3. Turn to the right into a Right Foot Forward Cat Leg Stance and execute a Knife Hand Square Block.
  4. Turn left into a north facing Left Foot Forward Front Stance and execute a Fist Lower X-Block to North.
  5. Step forward (north) into a Right Foot Forward Cat Leg Stance with a Right Reinforced Inner Forearm Block. The left hand is an upset fist at the right elbow.
  6. Step forward (north) with the left foot into a closed parallel stance. The right fist is in a pull-back position with the left fist palm-down above it.
  7. Look left (west) and execute a Left Bottom Fist Striking Block (shoulder height) + Left Front Kick, ending up in a Left Front Stance facing west. Then execute a head grab with the left hand + Right Outer Elbow Strike, striking your left hand with your right elbow.
  8. Move your right foot to your left foot into a north-facing closed parallel stance. The left fist is in the pull-back position with the right fist above it and facing palm down.
  9. Look right and execute a Right Bottom Fist Striking Block (shoulder height) + Right Front Kick, ending up in a Right Front Stance facing east. Then execute a head grab with the right hand + Left Outer Elbow Strike, striking your right hand with your left elbow.
  10. Moving your left foot slightly to the north, pivot into a north-facing Left Front Stance and execute a Right Outer Knife Hand Upper Strike + Left Knife Hand Upper Block.
  11. Execute a Right Front Kick to the north, then while moving into a Right Foot Forward Cross-Legged Stance facing North, execute a Right Rolling Back Knuckle Strike to the north. The left fist ends up in the pull-back position at your left side.
  12. Moving the left foot, pivot counter-clockwise into a Left Foot Forward Cat Leg Stance facing South East. At the same time, execute a Left Inner Forearm Block.
  13. Execute a Right Front Kick as you step forward into a Right Front Stance facing South East, and then execute a Right Fist Middle Thrust and then a Left Fist Middle Thrust.
  14. Moving the right foot, pivot clockwise into a Right Foot Forward Cat Leg Stance facing South West and execute a Right Inner Forearm Block.
  15. Execute a Left Front Kick and step into a Left Front Stance facing South West. Then execute a Left Fist Middle Thrust and then a Right Fist Middle Thrust.
  16. Moving the left foot, pivot counter-clockwise into a Left Foot Forward Cat Leg Stance facing South and execute a Left Reinforced Inner Forearm Block. The right hand is open palm against the left elbow.
  17. Stepping forward (south) into a Right Foot Forward Cat Leg Stance, execute a Right Reinforced Inner Forearm Block (left hand open palm against the right elbow).
  18. Stepping forward (south) into a Left Foot Forward Cat Leg Stance, execute a Left Reinforced Inner Forearm Block (right hand open palm against the left elbow).
  19. With both hands, grab each Shoulder Grab and execute a Right Knee Kick to the South (toes down on the right foot) with Keyii. As you put your right foot down, execute an Instep Stomp.
  20. After the Instep Stomp, pivot counter-clockwise on your right foot into a Left Foot Forward Cat Leg Stance with Left Knifehand Block (pullback hand is palm up across the solar plexus) facing North West.
  21. Moving the right foot, turn clockwise into a Right Foot Forward Cat Leg Stance and Right Knife Hand Block (pullback hand is palm up across the solar plexus) facing North East. The movement is not just a pivot. You actually need to execute a subtle “hop” in a North East direction, i.e., when you set your right foot down you do so in a very extended fashion and then bring the left foot forward into a proper Cat Leg Stance facing North East.
  22. Move your left foot slightly South West, and then move your right foot into Yoi Tachi facing North.
